What is a Miracle? Do Miracles really exist? Beware of Fake Miracles.

A lot of people ask the question, what is a miracle…Do miracles really exist? How can we know a true miracle from a fake one as seen all over the world today? To understand what is a miracle we need to take a look at some clear scriptural examples and also recent miracle stories as documented by a former atheist and Chicago Tribune journalist Lee Strobel The Case for Miracles: A Journalist Investigates Evidence for the Supernatural. There is abundant evidence that genuine miracles still exist displaying God’s power and divine intervention. God performed miracles through Moses which includes Moses’ rod turned into a serpent (Ex 4:2–3), The serpent transformed into a rod (Ex 4:4), Moses’ rod swallowed the others (Ex 7:12) but today the fakes abound.

David Hume position on miracles.

Scottish philosopher David Hume one of the leading protagonist against miracles in his essay, “On Miracles.” defined a miracle as a violation of the law of nature and believed that claims of miracles come from uneducated persons in less advanced societies, people and places unaware of how the world works. Citing that it was more likely that there was a natural explanation for an event than a supernatural one.

Miracle stories — Example of miracles

From the bible account in [Genesis 18:1–15], Sarah due to her old age laughed and initially did not believe when she overheard the three messengers from God who visited them tell Abraham she will have a child. To her, it was practically impossible due to her old age (disbelieve). Most Christian today are like Sarah.

Sarah Abraham

If we take a look at Daniel’s situation in [Daniel 6: 1-28]. He was a jew, a friend of the God of miracles who he prays to every morning. He was loved and made the chief of the Magi by king Darius due to his wisdom but was hated by the rest of the Magi due to jealousy who sought and conspired to bring him down at all cost.

Daniel in the Lions' Den 1613-1615 Peter Paul Rubens

Daniel’s strength was his relationship with our miraculous God by praying steadfastly every morning, afternoon and evening. The rest of the Magi appointed alongside him to rule saw his devotion to God of miracles as the only route to bring him down and they plotted to manipulate this strength to achieve their evil plot of destroying him. The only way they can get him into trouble was to trick and convince the king to make a law against Daniels God [The Almighty Holy God]. They asked the king to pass a law that everyone must pray to him only as their god within the next 30 days and anyone in default will be thrown into the lion’s den.

Of course, Daniel will be in default as he continued praying to only the one true I am that I am, hence he was thrown into the den filled with hungry lions for disobeying the decree but here come the miraculous part folks.

In the lion’s den, Daniel prayed and the bible tells us God heard his prayer and his miracle was activated as a great angel was sent to shut the mouth of the hungry lions [hallelujah]. In Sarah’s situation Just as God has promised [Genesis 21: 1–7] after 9 months Sarah who has passed childbearing age gave birth to a baby boy. Here is the interesting part. After her initial mockery laughter (disbelieve), When she realized the message was from God she believed as accounted in Hebrews 11:11 [and by faith even Sarah who has passed childbearing age was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who has made the promise]. Sara considered God faithful hence her miracle was activated. The bouncing baby boy was named Isaac.

Definition of miracle.

You see in our everyday lives miracles happen. So when people ask what is a miracle? According to dictionary.com definition of miracle, it is an effect or extraordinary event in the physical world that surpasses all known human or natural powers and is ascribed to a supernatural cause. Such an effect or event manifesting or considered as a work of God and can come in different forms including healing, power, grace, provision, salvation, and protection. Miracles can be likened to Divine intervention, interference of a deity in human life, popularly extended to any miraculous-seeming turn of events. It can happen at Any Time, at any place. It is all about your belief in miracles. Yes, the word belief is very key because this is why people question it.

Are genuine miracles still happening today?.

The answer varies depending on who you ask. A lot argue that supernatural deeds are not being performed today due to the rise in the activities of fake Men of God whose only business is to fleece unsuspecting members by simply staging miracles to increase their popularity and draw in more victims otherwise why do people keep opening churches? What is wrong with where they were worshiping before? It all boils down to resource control. These men understand the psychology of the sick and needy and manipulate this trait. People love signs and wonders so they run from one prophet to the other ignoring God’s word. Signs and wonders are special miracles that “signify” that something miraculous is going on. They are always intended on making people “wonder” and marvel. These include Miraculous Healing, raising the dead, giving sight, speaking in tongues, Prophesying. The Problem with Signs and Wonders is that those who seek it only seek their immediate benefits. They take their eyes off the rock (Jesus Christ) and look onto the performer. This makes manipulating them easy. The church has now been turned into business centers which is one of the things Jesus Christ never wanted. Most of these men have no iota of the holy spirit in them. Their actions and exposures have caused so many to lose faith as Christians likening all proclaimed Men of God as same. They are simply lovers of earthly things and worship only money. It is very clear in the bible:

No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money (Luke16:13 — ESV).

The Pass over of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money-changers seated at their tables. And He made as scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money-changers and over turned their tables; and to those who were selling the doves, He said, “Take these things away; stop making My Father’s house a place of business”(John2:13–16).

Visible and invisible miracles.

We only take notice of the visible miracles but everyday powerful invisible miracles happen and this is why we do see so few genuine Miracles Today? These invisible miracles involve changing and turning of hearts. Hence, God is doing far more miracles than we realize.

The Greatest Miracle.

How many of us realize forgiveness is one of the Greatest Miracle but the Greatest Miracle of All Time was the incarnation of Christ (making our lord Jesus both human and divine). The Lord’s word given to Joseph regarding Mary, to whom he was engaged: Matt. 1:21 “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” Christ came in the flesh, under the Law, to fulfill the Law on our behalf (Matthew 5:17; Galatians 4:5) and to shed His blood for the forgiveness of our sins (Hebrews 9:22).

Extraordinary miracles.

In the new testament God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them (Acts 19:11–12 NKJV). These were extraordinary miracles. In other words, these miracles were different from the usual. When clothing that touched Paul’s body was placed on people who were sick or demon-possessed, those people were made whole, healed and delivered. That was not the usual; it was an extraordinary occurrence.

Modern miracles.

Talk of modern extraordinary miracles today, there are a lot of Miraculous Healing Doctors Can’t Explain. Lee Strobel does a wonderful job in documenting these and this is why The Case for Miracles: A Journalist Investigates Evidence for the Supernatural is a must-read. Take the case of Barbara’s story in his book, diagnosed with progressive multiple sclerosis 16 years earlier. She hadn’t been able to walk for seven years. A prayer request to Moody Bible Institute’s radio program saw over 450 people write letters to her church, indicating they were praying for her. As Barbara’s aunt read some of those letters to her at her bedside, The I am that I am stepped in and her miracle was activated. Barbara heard a man’s voice say, “My child, get up and walk.” And she did. She has been free from multiple sclerosis ever since.

Divine intervention is the only way the above miracle story can be described. Let us take a look at other cases elsewhere: the case of 14-year-old John Smith a Missouri Teen Submerged in Icy Lake for 15 Minutes Makes ‘Miracle’ Recovery. Doctors tried for nearly a half-hour to revive him, to no avail. His mother resorted to prayer and his pulse was back. What of the U.S. teen D’Zhana Simmons who lived 118 days with no heart. What a healing and these all attest to God’s divine power and intervention.

We can rest secure in the faith that God, who is the God of miracles, hears our prayers. Peter said to a man who was paralyzed for eight years, “Jesus the Christ heals you. Arise and make your bed.” Acts 9:32–35. Then he arose immediately. “Through the hands of the apostles, many signs and wonders were done among the people … And believers were increasingly added to the Lord.” Acts 5:12–15. Simply have faith in the almighty God. Repent today and seek God’s forgiveness. Pray for spiritual gifts and see God’s divine power intervene in your life. Have absolute faith in the word of God. The God of miracles uses supernatural power as a revelation of himself to people on earth.

For a fact, as a Christian, a miracle and belief in miracles go together. If you don’t believe in miracles a simple visit to a nearby hospital will convince you. It will change your mind about how you view miracles. I don’t know what you going through right now. No matter how hopeless the situation is, just be like Daniel, go only to the God of miracles in prayer with belief and faith and your faith will see you through. It has happened to me countless times.

Trust only in God and God’s word and Never give up trusting him. He is the same God that spoke through Elisha While the harpist was playing in 2 kings 3:17, You will see neither wind nor rain, yet this valley will be filled with water, and you, your cattle and your other animals will drink. Our God is a gap filler. He just wants you and i to come to him in truth and in spirit with our wants and needs so that he can appease our appetites.
